It’s also a good idea to check whether your travel insurance covers accidental damage before staying in someone else’s home.
Petra Novak, who uses home exchange site Kindred, said she had had several instances of items being damaged in her London flats due to the platform’s own damage protection policy.
The 34-year-old, who uses the platform while working remotely across Europe, said she saved around £18,000-£20,000 through house swaps.
She said she was initially nervous about switching homes with a stranger, but has never had a bad experience.
But for added peace of mind, she likes to check a prospect’s social media profiles, adding that a personal touch can help build trust before an exchange.
“Personally, I love it when someone submits a booking request with a nice introductory letter explaining themselves and why they’re visiting London.”
