Château La Coste France is a working organic wine estate just outside Aix en Provence, but the wine is really only one part of the draw. After basing ourselves nearby at Château de la Gaude for the trip, we spent a morning here and it’s easy to see why it’s become one of the most talked about spots for wine tasting Provence has to offer. It’s part winery, part contemporary art park, part architecture showcase, with sweeping vineyard views and fabulous Provence wines throughout, making it one of the more memorable stops for wine tasting Aix en Provence has to offer. If you’re planning a visit, here’s what to actually expect, based on what we did, plus how it compares to a smaller, in town option like La Cave du Cours Mirabeau.

What is Château La Coste
Château La Coste France is a working organic wine estate just outside Aix en Provence, but the wine is really only one part of the draw. The property doubles as an open air art and architecture park, with installations and buildings from names like Jean Nouvel, Tadao Ando, Frank Gehry, and Yoko Ono scattered across the vineyards. It’s the kind of place where you plan for a quick tasting and end up staying for hours drinking wine, eating and taking everything in.
There is also a sister estate, La Coste de Los Andes, in the Uco Valley of Mendoza, Argentina, producing its own organic wines under the same ownership. It doesn’t appear to be set up for public visits the way the Provence estate is, but the wines are worth seeking out if you want to taste both sides of the project.
Château La Coste Wine Tasting: What to Expect
Château La Coste offers several wine tasting and tour options whether you’re looking for wine and cheese, wine and food pairing, a visit to Jean Nouvel’s winery and tasting, a Introductory Workshop – The Art of Tasting, or simple wine tasting.
If you just want to go purely for wine tasting, Château La Coste’s free wine tasting is held in their wine shop and no reservation is needed. We went in the morning when it was quiet, but if you go after midday in high season, expect a wait.
We tasted a range of the estate’s wines, whites, rosés, and their sparkling wines. The Grand Vin Rosé and Grand Vin Blanc were the clear standouts of the day for both my sister and me. Although their rosé bubbles were also fabulous and easy drinking.

The man pouring for us was genuinely friendly and knowledgeable. The kind of tasting that actually teaches you something about the wine and the estate, rather than just pouring and moving you along. If you’re deciding whether Château La Coste is worth building a wine day around, the tasting alone makes a strong case, before you even factor in the art and architecture.
I highly recommend adding Château La Coste to your wine tasting in Aix en Provence itinerary. If you book a tour that doesn’t go to the wine shop, it’s still worth a visit. They often have wine specials, limited edition wines, beautiful glasses and serving items for sale.
Château La Coste Limited Edition Wines
If you’re looking for a limited edition wine check out Madame ‘B’ which is a collaboration between Damien Hirst and Château La Coste on a rosé brand. Only 10,000 bottles were made of Madame ‘B’ 2025 vintage, and it’s blend of grapes from across the estate, featuring varieties Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Counoise.

Château La Coste France Art and Architecture Walk
Beyond the tasting room, the grounds themselves are an interesting, well curated feature if you like modern art. Walking paths wind through the vineyards past major architectural and art installations, so even if wine isn’t the main reason you’re visiting, the walk is worth the trip on its own.
You can either walk around by yourself or book a guided art and architecture walk. They advise allowing 2 to 3 hours for your visit and to start a self-guided tour before 3pm. Guided tours are available everyday in French and English at 10am and 2:30pm. You can book tickets for that here.
Comfortable shoes are a must here, this isn’t a quick stop, it’s a proper walk through the estate. I’d also advise a sun hat and SPF as there’s not a lot of shade.

Where to Eat at Château La Coste, France
We didn’t eat on site during our visit, we just followed our wine tasting with a cold glass of our favorite, the Château La Coste Grand Vin Blanc at La Terrasse which is next to the wine shop and open from 10am to 10pm every day. Sat in the shade of the trees, enjoying the views was the perfect way to start the day.

However, if you do want to eat here, Château La Coste has several dining options worth knowing about if you’re planning a longer day there. The estate’s best known restaurant is helmed by Argentinian chef Francis Mallmann, known for cooking over open fire and known for dishes like beef empanadas and slow cooked steak. For something more casual, the estate also runs La Rôtisserie and an Italian restaurant, so there’s a range of options depending on how formal you want the meal to be. If a sit down lunch or dinner is part of your plan, it’s worth booking ahead, especially for the Mallmann restaurant given its popularity.

Who owns Château La Coste
Château La Coste is owned by Irish hotelier Paddy McKillen who bought the property in 2002 and it opened to the public in 2011. He’s spent a long time renovating the estate, converting the vineyards to organic and then biodynamic viticulture, as well as a gallery and sculpture park. McKillen is still working on the expansion of his estate.
A Full Provence Wine Day
If you want to turn Château La Coste into a full wine tasting Aix en Provence day rather than a quick stop, here’s how ours played out. After the morning tasting and the pool back at Château de la Gaude to cool off, we Ubered into Aix en Provence for a second wine tasting at La Cave du Cours Mirabeau. Less is more when it comes to wine tasting in Provence. It’s a place to be savored and enjoyed at a leisurely place, not to try to cram as much in as you can.

La Cave du Cours Mirabeau is on the beautiful Cours Mirabeau in Aix en Provence in the cellar of a mansion built in built in 1792. I’d advise booking in advance as La Cave du Cours Mirabeau only offers one tasting at 3:30pm daily. During the tasting you’ll try 3 local Provence wines (white, rosé, and red) with cheese pairings with a knowledgable guide. While the Châteaus are a spectacular way to go wine tasting, if you don’t have a car, are limited on time, or don’t want to leave the center of Aix on Provence, this is a convenient option.
Dinner in Aix en Provence
Since we were already in Aix en Provence, we went for cocktails on Cours Mirabeau, followed by dinner at Le Ramus Restaurant, a former medieval hospital turned church. I highly recommend this charming Aix En Provence restaurant which really respects the history of the building. They even sought out and reused the original stones from 1389 and preserved traces of the old structures, for a space that feels like you’ve stepped back in time.

The filet and foie gras there were excellent, easily one of the better meals of the trip, but they were all fabulous! Pairing Château La Coste with a stop at La Cave du Cours Mirabeau gives you both the countryside estate experience and a more local in town tasting in the same day.

Where to Stay Nearby in Aix en Provence
We based ourselves at Château de la Gaude for our Provence stay, which put us within easy reach of Château La Coste, Aix en Provence, and the wider wine region without needing to move hotels throughout the trip. If you’re planning a similar wine focused few days and want a luxury hotel, a château stay in the area makes a beautiful home base for exactly this kind of day trip. The other benefit is Château de la Gaude is also a winery and offers wine tasting there. Full review coming next.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The wine tasting is genuinely good on its own, but the art and architecture walk across the estate and the views make it worth the visit even for people who aren’t especially into wine.
If you’re just doing the free wine tasting you can do it in under an hour but plan for half a day if you want to properly do the wine tasting, art walk and have a meal on site.
Yes. We paired our Château La Coste visit with a second tasting at La Cave du Cours Mirabeau in Aix en Provence later the same day, giving us both a countryside estate experience and a more local, in town tasting. However, we did switch from driving to Uber for the second wine tasting to avoid drink driving. So factor that in to your wine tasting route planning.
We stayed at Château de la Gaude, which put us within easy reach of Château La Coste, Aix en Provence, and the surrounding wine region for the length of our trip. It was exactly the relaxing, luxury stay we wanted.
