Anduril unveils Thunder autonomous tiltrotor concept

Anduril has kicked off its 2026 display at the Farnborough International Airshow with the unveiling of the Thunder, an autonomous tiltrotor designed for modular payloads.

The impressive-looking aircraft, shown at the air show as a full-scale model, follows the general Anduril concept of featuring modular and easily interchangeable payloads. The Thunder can operate as an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) node as well as air-to-ground missiles, tube-launched drones, anti-drone effectors or as a full combat asset boasting up to 76 70mm rockets.

Thunder can deliver affordable mass to even the most heavily defended battle spaces, Anduril says. From the beginning, the Thunder was designed for manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) operations using manned rotary wing assets such as the Chinook. The company says a single Apache teamed with three Thunder units can carry three times the number of munitions into battle without risking additional personnel.

This is a large aircraft classified as a Group 5 UAS, along with mainstays of drone warfare such as the MQ-9 Reaper. Nevertheless, it is designed to be transported inside a standard shipping container, enabling intermodal transport by road, rail, sea and air. If necessary, the Thunder can also self-deploy to any operating location within range.

Thanks to its tiltrotor, the Thunder is designed to operate in harsh locations while allowing a significant speed advantage over traditional rotorcraft. As part of the ongoing collaboration between Anduril and Archer Aviation aeronautics As previously reported, the Thunder will feature a hybrid electric powertrain. Rotor RPM is variable during flight and can be configured for maximum efficiency, maximum performance, or a combination of the two, as well as reducing acoustic signature if required.

Along with the headline combat role, Anduril says the new tiltrotor could be deployed for maritime patrol using modular ISR payloads, or for logistics purposes where the module bays can be used for cargo loading.

Rising Startup

Founded less than a decade ago by a group of entrepreneurs including Oculus VR founder and billionaire Palmer Luckey, Anduril has become one of the most talked-about names in drone and AI technology.

The company is named after a sword featured in JRR Tolkien’s novel. lord of the rings – Although ridiculed in some quarters of the industry, it has undoubtedly proven successful in many areas. Through suitable acquisitions by other companies, the Anduril name now appears behind products such as the Altius tube-launched drone series and the Dive-LD autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), which is currently informing large AUV designs for navies, including the Royal Australian Navy.

Anduril used its in-house team of designers to produce one of only two Cooperative Combat Aircraft (CCA) designs selected by the U.S. Air Force for its Increment One CCA program. The YFQ-44A Fury was first unveiled in 2025 and has now completed initial operational air-to-air missile tests.

Anduril leans heavily toward a systems approach, with individual platforms tailored to different roles but able to interact seamlessly with each other in real time. ISR drones automatically link up with strike drones to designate targets and prosecute autonomously, but any final decision to ‘kill’ is subject to manual human approval.

They also join the ever-growing counter-UAS market, and Anduril C-UAS systems have been prominently deployed at public sporting events in the United States over the past few weeks.
