Two firefighters have died while fighting a massive fire near Bordeaux airport in southwestern France, officials said.
According to French media reports, the fire near the airport parking lot started as a forest fire and spread to the building.
Photos shared on social media showed passengers disembarking from the plane with a huge plume of smoke billowing nearby. A number of flights scheduled to arrive at Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport were delayed.
It is reported that about 100 firefighters are working to extinguish the fire with the support of professional aircraft.
Interior Minister Laurent Núñez said he had received news of the death from officials in the Gironde region.
During a question-and-answer session in the French parliament on Tuesday, Núñez also said he would travel to Gironde “as soon as possible” to oversee firefighting efforts.
The Gironde is one of several French regions hit by wildfires in recent days due to a series of unusual and prolonged heat waves.
