Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming is the frontrunner to be appointed England men’s Test coach.
The 53-year-old is expected to succeed compatriot Brandon McCollum, who was sacked following the 2-1 defeat to New Zealand in June.
Fleming recently left his post as head coach of Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings, where he had been in charge of the T20 side since 2009, the year after his playing career ended.
The task facing England’s next Test coach is to revive a team that has lost eight of its last 12 matches, including a 2-2 home draw with India last summer, a 4-1 batting average in Australia’s Ashes over the winter and a recent 2-1 comeback against New Zealand.

It is still unclear whether Fleming will be in charge of England’s upcoming three-Test series against Pakistan if appointed. sky sports – Starts at Headingley on August 19th.
Assistant coach Marcus Trescothick could take over as interim coach for the Pakistan series if Fleming is unable to start work immediately, with England’s next Test match after the home summer not coming until the tour of South Africa in December.
England are also currently left without a permanent Test captain following Ben Stokes’ retirement at the end of the New Zealand series.

Former skipper Joe Root has stepped in to replace Stokes in the second Test against New Zealand and appears to be the only credible alternative to Test vice-captain and white-ball skipper Harry Brook.
After three Tests in South Africa over December and January, England face Australia in the 150th Anniversary Test in Melbourne in March ahead of the home Ashes series from June 18 to August 2 next year.

Former Black Caps captain Fleming was McCullum’s teammate during his outstanding Test career, averaging just over 40 with the bat.
The 53-year-old took over as head coach of Chennai Super Kings in July after 18 years with the franchise as a player and coach, winning a record five IPL titles.
Fleming is familiar with the county set-up from his time playing for Middlesex, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, which won the 2005 county championship title.
