Best Caramel Apple Cider
I know that the most popular drink on cold winter nights is probably hot chocolate. But personally, I'd choose a glass of warm cider any day of the week. For the past few years I have been using date caramel to sweeten apple cider. It adds the perfect amount of sweetness, rich caramel flavor, and thickens (not to mention the fiber and antioxidants). It's absolutely delicious and so easy to make.
Ingredients needed to make caramel apple cider:
- apple juice– Used 100% pure pressed apple juice. Do not use apple juice with added sugar.
- date– We use Medjool dates to sweeten this caramel apple cider. It adds a delicious caramel-like richness and thickens the cider slightly. This is delicious!! You don't get the taste for 'dating'. However, you can sweeten it with brown sugar if you wish.
- cinnamon sticks– We boiled the cider with a cinnamon stick, but you could also add a teaspoon of ground cinnamon.
- Clove powder, allspice, cardamom– I thought this was the perfect combination of spices, but you can play around with whatever combination you like. I think grated nutmeg or ginger would be delicious too!
How to make caramel apple cider:
- Try making jujube caramel. In a high-speed blender, add 8 to 10 seeded dates and 1/4 cup water. Puree until smooth, adding water little by little if necessary. separately.
- Try making cider. Place apple juice, cinnamon stick, and ground spices in a large saucepan. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium and simmer for 20 minutes.
- Add caramel. Whisk in about half of the date caramel. Taste and add more caramel until desired sweetness is reached.
- provide. Pour the cider into a serving mug. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg, if desired. enjoy!
tips and suggestions
Use other sweeteners:
If you don't want to use date caramel, you can also sweeten your apple cider with brown sugar or maple syrup.
How to soften hard dates:
If dating becomes too difficult, don't give up! Place the dates in a medium bowl and add enough boiling water to cover. Let soak for at least 10 minutes. Drain the water and proceed with the recipe.
Serving suggestions:
We coated the rims of the mugs with cinnamon sugar to add something extra. Completely unnecessary, but that's the fun of it! To do this, add some apple juice (or water) to a shallow bowl. In another shallow bowl, add about 1/4 cup granulated sugar and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon. I also added a little turbinado sugar for a little sparkle. Stir to combine. Hold the mug by the rim and dip it into the apple juice. Let the excess drip off and then roll in the cinnamon sugar.
Then we topped the apple cider with whipped cream, nutmeg powder, caramel drizzle, and thin slices of apple.
Store leftover date caramel in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 weeks.
