Meet the Owner: Catherine Ansel

Growing up in France, Catherine Ansel learned to embody the French mentality of “quality over quantity.” Combining luxurious living with limited wardrobe space, French women are known for buying less and coveting classic pieces. Using this way of thinking allowed Ansel to pursue her own style and start her own business.

Born and raised in France, Ansel moved to the United States at age 22. From New York to New Jersey, and then to Texas where she opened her first boutique, it was only after moving to California that she visited her first luxury resale boutique and fell in love with the idea. Soon after, Ansel moved to Tampa, Florida, where she opened Couture USA in Westchase in 2003.

The mother of two knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur growing up and learned everything about owning a business from her mother. Like any entrepreneur, Ansel had to work long hours, but when he started his own business, he wasn't afraid of hard work. In 2015, Couture was named “One of America’s Fastest-Growing Companies” by the Inc 500 Awards. She started with no employees and had to do everything herself, but she built the company into what it is today, a beloved location in Tampa that is also growing online.

Personalize with style

For those of you who don't know Ansel, her style is classic and elegant, with a focus on flattering silhouettes. She believes that a person should dress with confidence and that her attire should fit her own lifestyle while making her feel good, confident and attractive. Because of her style philosophy, she prefers fitted, tapered clothes that flatter her body. Neutrals, black, and white are colors that go well with the season, and I love looking for clothes with elegant details like funky sleeves or necklines.

Ansel's first luxury purchase was the Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene Petit Bucket bag. I had no idea this print would become popular among Louis Vuitton lovers. Since then, her style has evolved to pair with some of her favorite designers, including Chanel and Hermes. Although we don't have access to Catherine's closet in person, she's been incorporating some of her favorite staples into her everyday style. Whether it's a Hermes Constance belt, Chanel flap bag or stacking bracelets, she's always ready for a day in couture.

Catherine's Advice for First-Time Buyers

When purchasing your first luxury item, consider making it into a handbag or jewelry piece. Not only are they meant to be worn and enjoyed as much as possible, but many of these items are also investment pieces. Ansel suggests choosing a style that suits your lifestyle and personal tastes, but sticking to brands that maintain their values, such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Hermes, David Yurman, and Cartier. Investing in quality ensures its value even if you decide to sell it later.

Just as importantly, don't settle for less. Purchase the piece of your dreams by shopping at luxury resale boutiques, which can offer pre-loved luxury items at discounted prices.
