A car plowed into a crowd in New Orleans, killing 10 people and injuring 30 others, city emergency officials said.

Nola Reddy’s emergency preparedness department said in a statement that the incident occurred on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter around 3 a.m. local time.

A New Orleans police spokesman told the BBC’s US news partner CBS: “Initial reports indicate a car may have struck a group of people.”

A CBS reporter observed several people injured at the intersection of Bourbon and Canal streets.

The BBC has seen video of a person lying on the ground as others gather, then what appears to be a gunshot is heard and the crowd disperses.

Another graphic video shows two injured people lying in the street.

Witnesses told CBS that a car crashed into the crowd, the driver began firing his weapon and police returned fire.

Police have not confirmed this report.

Nola Reddy previously posted on social media that “there was a mass casualty incident on Canal Street and Bourbon Street” and told people nearby to “get out of the area.”
