A child was injured in a Russian airstrike on Kiev, Ukrainian officials say.

A child was injured in a Russian airstrike on Kiev, Ukrainian officials say.

Russian airstrikes on the Ukrainian capital Kiev wounded at least 14 people, including four children, Ukrainian officials said.

Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said two high-rise residential buildings were damaged in the attack, but did not specify whether the damage was direct or from falling debris.

“Everyone is receiving medical assistance and some are hospitalized,” the Kiev military administration said in a post on Telegram.

Meanwhile, Russian air defense forces destroyed a drone heading to Moscow, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobinin.

The strike comes as US President Donald Trump said he would meet Russian President Vladimir Putin if he knew “we’re going to make a deal”, days after the pair’s plans to meet in Budapest fell through.

“I’ve always had a great relationship with President Vladimir Putin, but this was very disappointing,” Trump said aboard Air Force One as he began a week-long tour of Asia.

He added, “I thought this would have happened before peace was achieved in the Middle East.”

President Trump also said he hoped China would help in efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

The U.S. president is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea on Thursday.

Ending the Russia-Ukraine war has been a focus of Trump in recent months, and a cease-fire agreement has so far eluded him despite his campaign promises to quickly resolve the situation.

A summit with President Putin last August yielded no tangible results, and President Trump is growing increasingly frustrated with Moscow.

“Every time I talk to Vladimir, we have a great conversation, and those guys don’t go anywhere,” Trump said earlier this week.

But Russia’s top envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, who met U.S. officials in Washington on Friday and Saturday, told CNN he believed Russia, Ukraine and the United States were close to a diplomatic solution to end the war.

“It’s a big move for President Zelenskyy to acknowledge that it’s already about the front line,” Dmitriev said, referring to the Ukrainian president’s description of the current front line as a starting point for negotiations as a “good compromise.”

“His previous position was that Russia had to leave completely, so I actually think we are reasonably close to a diplomatic solution that could be worked out,” Dmitriev added.

President Trump this week announced new sanctions targeting Russia’s largest oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil, saying talks with Putin “are not going anywhere.”
