Retired British couple Jane Kelvey and Alan Kelvey spoke to BBC Newsnight after their close encounter with the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich on Tuesday morning.
“They honked five times, which means did you see us?,” Jane explained.
“We immediately saw that we had made a deliberate change by turning two degrees to port, which of course means we saw them,” she added.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said the yacht was making a “dangerous approach” towards the warship and the crew attempted to make contact several times via radio, fired warning flares and then fired rifles.
The Pentagon described the encounter as an “isolated incident” and unrelated to Sunday’s seizure of a Russian Shadow Fleet tanker in the strait.
