A diver captures rare footage of a great white shark in the Mediterranean

A diver who filmed a very rare encounter with a great white shark in the Mediterranean last May described the moment as “very special”.

“The shark was close to us (…) In fact, my fingers were shaking when I tried to activate the camera,” volunteer Derk Remmers told the BBC.

Overfishing is thought to have contributed to the species’ near extinction in the Mediterranean.

Scientists say people need not worry as the shark, believed to be an adult male, was discovered several miles off in the ocean between Tunisia and Sicily.

Conservationists said they hoped the sighting would encourage governments to create marine protected areas in the Mediterranean.

Divers working for NGO Healthy Seas captured footage during their dives to highlight the problem of so-called “ghost fishing nets”.
