Caroline Dubois awaits her opportunity to compete in the WBC Lightweight World Championship presented by Katie Taylor.
Taylor’s last three fights have all been for the undisputed super lightweight championship. However, this means the WBC lightweight belt has not been contested in over two years.
Dubois became the WBC’s interim titlist at 135 pounds and would eventually be eligible to fight for a full world championship. First, Taylor must decide which division she will continue to compete in.
“I have to wear the belt mandatory. Katie has to come back down and fight me or she has to let go of the belt,” Dubois said. sky sports.
“She hasn’t fought for the belt in over a year. It seems clear she’s not going to come back down to 135 pounds, so she’s just hoarding the belt and blocking my trajectory, my future, my career. Purpose?
“She’s had a very good run in her career, she fought Amanda Serrano. I’m sure she would want a trilogy. That would be a big money fight, but it would be at 140 pounds. “
“So there’s nothing to do, even holding on to the belt. Just let it go and I can pursue my career and she can pursue hers.”
Here’s her message to Taylor: “Now it’s my turn. It’s my turn to do the same thing and be the undisputed man at 135 pounds.”
If Taylor relinquishes the lightweight title, Dubois wants to challenge WBC number one contender Rhiannon Dixon for the overall championship and unify with new WBO titlist Terri Harper next year.
“I want to fight Rhiannon Dixon,” Dubois said. “I’m sure she would love the opportunity to be back in world title contention.
“I don’t think there are many situations where you lose a belt and then get another world title opportunity in your next fight. Take it or leave it.
“It’s another chance for her to redeem herself and become world champion. If not, I’ll be competing in the next most difficult competition.”
Dubois would welcome a high-profile union with Harper. “Of course.” Dubois said. “That belt is mine. She’s holding on to it now. She knows her heart isn’t in the game. Her mind isn’t in the game.
“She tried to pull herself together as best as she could, but she showed her personality and quit. She crumbled under the pressure and I think she wants me to come and unbuckle her and I think that’s what will happen.
“I think she just wants a chance to get paid and sail off into the sunset.”
Amanda Serrano’s promoter Nakisa Bidarian has identified Dubois as the American star’s future opponent.
“They saw my potential. I also brought something new to the game,” Dubois said.
“I’m sure she’ll be very happy to finally win the 135-pound belt. I’ll give her that opportunity and if she’s willing to take it, I’ll give her the opportunity.
“People want to underestimate me and say I’m not in the big leagues, I’m not there yet. I understand that. I haven’t won an outright world title, I’ve never been in it, so to speak, it’s a big fight.
“But in terms of skills, ability, pedigree, everything, I’m there. I believe I’m there.”
