Two “magnet fishing” enthusiasts say they pulled a safe containing about $100,000 (£78,000) from a New York lake.
James Kane and Barbie Agostini threw a rope attached to a magnet into a lake at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens on Friday and pulled up a vault.
When the secured box was opened, they said it contained bundles of water-damaged $100 bills.
They told NY1, Out Police said the safe was not connected to any crime and could contain money. The BBC has reached out to the New York Police Department (NYPD) for comment.
“We’ve found a lot of safes before,” Kane said. “And then I looked at the numbers and thought, ‘This is impossible.’”
“When we took them out, there were hundreds of them in huge piles,” he added. “It’s a thick pile. It’s soaked and almost destroyed.”
“There was no identification in the safe and no way to find the original person,” Mrs. Agostini said. “(The police) said, ‘Well, congratulations!’” she said.
Magnet fishing involves dragging a fishing line with a strong magnet through lakes and rivers and watching what gets pulled up.
The couple said they started magnet fishing during the COVID-19 pandemic. They previously said they had discovered grenades from the Second World War, 19th-century guns and a life-size motorcycle.
