A scaled down Victory Parade on Red Square in Moscow

Moscow’s Victory Day parade was much quieter than usual Saturday, with few guests, few reporters and no military equipment on display.

The annual show of military might has been scaled back over security concerns, with Russian authorities fearing that Ukrainian forces could target Red Square with drone strikes.

A last-minute ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump saw Kiev agree not to attack the parade.

But the small display, devoid of any of the usual tanks or ballistic missiles, is a reminder that Russia’s war in Ukraine may not be in the plan.

Steve Rosenberg, the BBC’s Russian editor-in-chief, was one of the few foreign journalists allowed to attend this year.
