Abdullah Mason plans to prove he is one of the best young fighters on the planet when he fights Sam Noakes for the WBO lightweight world title in Riyadh.
Britain’s Moses Itauma is only 20 years old and has already made waves in the heavyweight division. But Mason is only 21 years old and if he can beat Noakes on Saturday night, he will beat the brilliant Itauma and advance to the World Championships.
A hot prospect, Mason turned pro at just 17 years old and achieved top ranking. With numerous championship fights under his belt, including a fight for the WBC light-heavyweight title against Anthony Yarde and David Benavidez, Mason will be looking to deliver the kind of performance that sets him apart as one of the best young fighters in the world.
“Absolutely, there is no doubt about it,” he said. “We’re just getting started. It’s been that way since I turned pro, so I think this will be another step and I’m going to go even harder in that direction. People will be talking about me being the next fighter or the biggest fighter in the sport.”
Noakes is a powerful fighter with an all-action style. Mason knows he will face a tough opponent.
“Sam Noakes is a fighter I have never faced before. He is stronger than the rest. I believe he has been in the 12 rounds twice. This will be my first 12 round fight so he is a fighter to look forward to. We have been training for it and staying ready,” said Mason. sky sports.
“He’s a heavy hitter and I’m ready for anything.”
But he added: “I think I have more to my style, but he also has what it takes. He is durable, strong and will come to the fight.”
Mason still thinks he can win by knockout, which would be his 18th of 20 fights in his professional career.
“I hope so. I think you’ll see it,” he said. “I hope this makes a statement. I feel like this will be another statement for the World Championships.”
If he wins, Mason will become another talented American capable of winning the lightweight world championship. This could put him on the path to a major unification with WBA titlist Gervonta Davis and WBC champion Shakur Stevenson.
“Boxing will decide it and I’ll just roll with it,” Mason said. “The world title opens the door to everything else, unification, fighting for other titles, big fights.
“The most important thing is to win a world title, and that opens the door to everything else.”
