Aberdeen manager search: Sandro Schwarz in mix for Pittodrie job as Eirik Horneland deal halts | soccer news

Aberdeen are looking at other options for their managerial vacancy following delays in finalizing Eirik Horneland’s contract.

The Dons were close to appointing the 50-year-old as their new manager last month, but his move to Pittodrie was halted due to uncertainty over his personal issues.

If his issues can be resolved soon, Horneland will continue to take the job.

But the Dons are now talking to other candidates, including former New York Red Bulls manager Sandro Schwarz.

The 47-year-old German, who previously managed Mainz, Dinamo Moscow and Hertha Berlin, left the New York Red Bulls in October last year.

He is well known to sporting director Lutz Pahnenstiel, who has been leading the process since Jimmy Thelin was sacked in early January.

Peter Leven then took over as interim manager and won one of eight league games, with the club finishing eighth in the Scottish Premier League.

However, they reached the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup with wins over Raith Rovers and Motherwell.

Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack said last week that the appointment of a new manager had been delayed due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

He added that Pfannenstiel had spoken to “a number of strong candidates both in the UK and abroad” and that the club “should not rush or compromise” on the appointment.

Despite ongoing talks with candidates, Aberdeen announced former assistant manager Tony Docherty returned to Pittodrie last month to support Leven.
