Max Verstappen claimed a dominant pole position at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but championship leader Lando Norris finished second to claim his first drivers’ title.
Red Bull’s Verstappen, who trails Norris by 12 points in Sunday’s title-deciding race, had two laps to go, enough to take pole at the Yas Marina Circuit, but the Briton decisively edged his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri by just three hundredths of a second.
Norris will be guaranteed his first title if he finishes in the top three on Sunday, but could clinch the title with a lower result if Verstappen fails to win the race.
Piastri’s already dim hopes of clinching his first title have been dealt a blow, with the Australian likely to require a major misfortune for his rivals to overturn a 16-point deficit to Norris.
