Actor Donald Sutherland has died at the age of 88.

Donald Sutherland, actor of films such as 'The Hunger Games' and 'Don't Look Now', passed away at the age of 88 after a long illness.

His son, actor Kiefer Sutherland, announced his father's death in a statement.

He said, “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my father, Donald Sutherland. I personally consider him one of the most important actors in film history.”

“He was never intimidated by roles, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved. No one could ask for more than that. It was a life well lived.”

Sutherland has appeared in films including The Dirty Dozen, MASH, and Klute.

One of the Canadian actor's breakthrough roles was as surgeon Hawkeye Pierce in the 1970 film version of MASH, a comedy about medics in the Korean War.

Sutherland has nearly 200 credits to his name.

Born in New Brunswick, Canada, Sutherland began his career as a radio news reporter before leaving Canada and traveling to London in 1957. There he studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Afterwards he had small roles in British film and television.

Sutherland appeared in the 1967 World War II action film The Dirty Dozen.

His mercurial presence saw him land another war film role as the aptly named Sergeant Oddball in Kelly's Heroes.
