AI-generated actors and scripts are now ineligible for Oscars

The organization that hosts the Academy Awards announced new Oscar rules on Friday, including several that address the use of generative artificial intelligence (GAI).

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences states that only performances that are “certified in the film’s legal bill and proven to have been performed with human consent” will be eligible for an Academy Award. Likewise, the Academy said a screenplay must be “human-produced” to be eligible.

The Academy also said it reserves the right to request additional information about the film’s use of AI and “human works.”

This rule change comes as independent films are working with an AI-generated version of Val Kilmer, AI “actor” Tilly Norwood continues to make headlines, and new video models have prompted at least some filmmakers to declare wholesale despair. AI was also one of the main obstacles in the 2023 actors and writers’ strike.

Outside of Hollywood, at least one novel has been pulled by a publisher for its use of AI, and other groups of writers are declaring their work ineligible for awards because of its use.
