Air New Zealand backs off 2030 carbon target: Travel Weekly

Air New Zealand announced on Monday that it was dropping its 2030 target to reduce its carbon intensity by 28.9 per cent compared to a 2019 baseline and withdrawing from the Science Based Targets initiative.

According to the airline, “means” “outside the airline’s direct control” needed to achieve its goals include the availability of new aircraft, the availability and price of alternative jet fuels, and global and domestic regulatory and policy support.

“Over recent months, and particularly the past few weeks, it has become clear that potential delays to our aircraft replacement plans could pose additional risks to our ability to achieve our targets,” Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran said in a statement.

The airline is considering new short-term carbon emissions reduction targets that “better reflect challenges related to aircraft and the availability of alternative jet fuels within the industry.”

However, Air New Zealand remains committed to achieving its net zero carbon emissions target by 2050, the airline said.
