Alec Stewart: Former England captain takes on role as Surrey’s high-performance adviser | cricket news

Alec Stewart has accepted a new role as high-performance cricket adviser at Surrey from early next year, with his workload “significantly reduced”.

The former England captain recently finished an 11-year spell as director of cricket at Surrey after winning a historic third successive county championship to spend more time with his family.

Stewart, who scored 40,936 points for Surrey during his 22-year career, will take up his new role for a select number of days a year from January with responsibility for continuing their success.

Stewart, 61, said: “Everyone knows my love for the club and what it means to me, so I’m delighted that the club wants me to continue in this new role.”

“I strongly believe that with this new setup we can continue the success we have seen in Surrey in recent years.”

Stewart will continue to work with Surrey manager Gareth Batty and captain Rory Burns, advising them on talent pathways.

However, the club will not appoint a new Director of Cricket.

Club chairman Oli Slipper said: “We fully understand and accept Alec’s decision to step down as director of cricket at the start of the season, but we wanted to retain his expertise and influence at Surrey.”

“We have had excellent conversations about common ground that will benefit both Alec and the club and I am delighted to say we have found a role that suits all parties.”
