All the new iOS 27 features you need to know

While Apple’s announcement of its new Siri AI and Apple Intelligence captured the attention of WWDC earlier this month, Apple also added several upgrades across its everyday apps and services in iOS 27, including smarter bill splitting in Apple Wallet, new ways to share your location in Find My, and improved Apple Maps features.

Apple has introduced improvements to “Flyover,” a feature that provides realistic 3D views of cities and landmarks. The feature is refreshed with more detailed visuals and smoother navigation.

The company also launched “Local Listings,” a new way for users to discover and save recommendations for restaurants, attractions, and other places within Maps by checking out trends. This could be Apple’s way of discouraging users from using Google Maps or third-party apps like Instagram or TikTok for local navigation.

Find My is more flexible with new location sharing controls. Starting this fall, users will be able to share their location for as long as they want – minutes, hours, days, or even a specific date and time.

Apple is also adding the ability to temporarily pause location sharing with individual contacts until the end of the day. The changes are designed for a variety of situations, such as keeping a surprise birthday party secret.

Apple Wallet has been greatly improved. One notable addition is that users can use their iPhone camera to scan receipts and automatically split bills with friends using Apple Cash. Powered by Apple Intelligence, this feature can identify individual items on a receipt, calculate each person’s share of taxes and tips, and facilitate redemptions directly through Messages or Wallet.

Wallet also supports digitization of physical memberships and point cards. Users can point their iPhone camera at a barcode or scan a digital card and save it directly to Wallet. Support extends to Apple Watch, so you can also pin your passes to your Apple Watch smart stack for faster searches.

Travelers can benefit from an improved hotel key experience. In addition to unlocking rooms and amenities with their iPhone or Apple Watch, guests staying at participating hotels and resorts can access trip details, activity itineraries, service information and real-time updates directly from Wallet.

Apple Pay

Apple Pay delivers a redesigned payment experience online and in apps. Users can more easily swipe between payment cards while viewing information such as rewards balance, debit account balance, and available postpay options. Later this year, Apple said users will also be able to add funds directly to eligible debit cards through Wallet or during Apple Pay payments.

For merchants, Apple is expanding “Tap to Pay” on iPhone with a new feature called “Tap to Share.” With a simple tap, customers can connect directly with participating merchants and securely share information such as loyalty accounts, shipping addresses, and contact information.

Apple Music is expanding its “Lyric Translation” feature to support seven additional language combinations, including English translations for French, German, Italian, Korean, Spanish, and Japanese songs. “Lyric Pronunciation” now helps users sing along to songs in languages they don’t speak by displaying phonetically translated lyrics across five new language combinations.

The “AutoMix” feature, which automatically creates smoother transitions between songs, is being enhanced for more immersive mixes and is expanding beyond iPhone to Apple TV and HomePod. Apple Music subscribers also have access to high-resolution lossless audio on Apple TV 4K, so users with compatible sound systems can experience studio-quality audio through tvOS.

Apple Podcasts

Podcast listeners are getting some welcome upgrades. The new “In-Program Search” feature allows users to search for specific podcast episodes directly on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro, and the web. Apple is also offering video podcasts on both Mac and Apple TV, reflecting the growing popularity of video-first podcasting.

iCloud Shared Albums

Apple is introducing full-resolution photo sharing, support for additional file formats, emoji reactions, an improved activity feed, and the ability to view activity by album. Additionally, new temporary albums are designed for short-term projects and events, allowing groups to collaborate without permanently taking up iCloud storage space.

In particular, people who don’t have an Apple device can contribute photos via the web.

fitness+

Fitness+ launches “Strong Through Menopause,” a three-week program featuring guided yoga and strength training designed to help people going through perimenopause and menopause build strength, improve mobility and balance, and manage stress. Apple will also add a new “Time to Walk” episode featuring actress Busy Philipps, who shares her personal story about her experience with menopause.

All of these features are available for developers to test right now through the Apple Developer Program, and a public beta version will be released next month.
