American Fashion at the 2021 Met Gala

Typically, as May approaches, celebrities, designers, and fashion enthusiasts alike begin to feel the excitement of the start of the new year. In this case, the party of the year is the infamous Met Gala, sometimes called the “Oscars of the East Coast.” Formerly known as the Costume Institute Gala or Costume Institute Benefit, the event has been hosted by the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for more than 73 years. This annual gala is a fundraiser for the Costume Institute that began in 1948 and continues to raise millions of dollars each year.

The Met Gala began in November and was moved to the first Monday in May in 2005, but due to COVID-19 the event was postponed and held on September 13.^Day this year. This year's Honorary Chairs panel included Anna Wintour, Tom Ford, and Adam Mosseri. The event was hosted by young celebrities including Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, Naomi Osaka, Timothy Chalome, Keke Palmer, and Ilana Glazer.

This socialite event features a diverse invite list ranging from Hollywood's biggest names to designers, artists, musicians and more. Although this premiere event is very exclusive, people from all over the world tune in to watch the stream to see who gets to the carpet and what they're wearing. This year's theme will continue next year with a two-part exhibition exploring American fashion. The name of the first small exhibition is: America: Dictionary of FashionThe focus is on patchwork quilting, which serves as a metaphor for the melting pot of cultures living in this country.

Following tradition, visitors are asked to match their fashion to the theme of the exhibition. This year's guests brought American fashion to life on the red carpet, and all of us here at Couture focused on the show to showcase our favorite looks for 2021!

Keke Palmer

In true American fashion, Keke Palmer teamed up with Sergio Hudson to help her embody Diana Ross' infamous show-stopping style and elegance for her Met Gala look. The shimmering gold dress is sleek and flattering, while the low open back adds a sensuous finish. With a smokey eye and stunning hairdo, Palmer showed off her confidence while hosting the prestigious event.

Yara Shahidi

The actress and activist, who is a Dior ambassador, tries to combine the two in all of her fashion, especially in gowns featuring intricate beading, gauze trains, braided caps, diamond chokers and elbow-length gloves. This truly amazing outfit paid a perfect homage to Baker and her 1920s-1930s fashion while letting Shahidi shine.

Sienna Miller, a fashion icon in her own right, designed the dress for the Met Gala. gucci And it shone on the carpet. Supermodel Karli Kloss took up the task and showed up to the Met Gala in an all-red Carolina Herrera dress. This custom piece was inspired not only by the house's founder, but also by the rose, the official flower of the United States. Made of silk, this dress has wide sleeves and a long train for an elegant feel that catches the eye.

Even though she arrived late, Rihanna was the most anticipated guest everyone was waiting for. With a history of memorable Met Gala looks, everyone was looking forward to seeing what Riri would arrive wearing. Blending Old Hollywood glamor with American classics, 19-year-old Billie Eilish stunned at the Met Gala in an Oscar de la Renta dress. Surprisingly, Eilish only agreed to wear this gown if the house agreed to completely stop using/selling fur in their fashions.

Indigenous model Quannah Chasinghorse, 19, had one of the most memorable and stunning outfits of the evening. An absolute vision in a Peter Dundas gold lime gown, Quannah completed her look with Navajo turquoise and silver jewels. Attending the Met Gala with traditional facial tattoos and accessories, she paved the way for Native representation and caused quite a stir on the Internet upon her arrival at the Gala.
