Amid the chaos in Mexico, false images have stoked fear.
Online misinformation has spread rapidly since the Mexican military killed a top Mexican cartel leader, sparking fear and confusion among residents and tourists alike. Mexican officials said some AI-generated images and fake news reports may have been linked to criminal actors.
“There were images and videos that weren’t real. People started posting that gangs were shooting randomly and killing people in town. That wasn’t true.” “I saw an AI image of a church downtown burning down, and it really struck a chord with those of us who live here.” “There are no official reports, like news reports. The authorities haven’t really said much. We’re all in the dark.” “Please go inside the house.” “I’ve owned drones for a few years for content creation, and it was really eye-catching for me to be able to see what was going on in the field. It looked like the whole Costco was on fire, but when I got the drone out, all I could see was cars in the parking lot.” “A young man came running at us with a gun, came back, pointed at my head through the window, and shouted in Spanish, ‘Get out of the car, get out of the car.’ He threw an incendiary device, a bomb, etc. into the car, which quickly burst into flames. He then did the same to the truck that was there.”
