An Amazon warehouse worker has died on the job at an Oregon facility.

An Amazon employee at a Troutdale warehouse in Oregon died on the job last week, a company spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch.

According to a report by Western Edge, an independent investigative firm covering the Pacific Northwest, the worker collapsed and lay dead on the floor of the PDX9 warehouse while employees continued working nearby.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our team member, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with their loved ones during this difficult time,” Amazon spokesperson Sam Stephenson told TechCrunch. “We have reached out to his family and provided resources to support them. We have provided on-site grief counselors and additional support for staff at the PDX9 facility. We thank the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Department and local emergency medical services for their hard work.”

In a Reddit forum for Amazon fulfillment center employees, several people claiming to work at PDX9 said the building was particularly hot after installing soundproofing curtains, restricting airflow. They speculated that the heat may have contributed to the employee’s death by increasing the physical strain of fulfillment center work. According to Western Edge, some employees noticed the building was cooler when they returned to work the next day.

However, Amazon said the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) determined the incident was not work-related. Employees were sent home early and paid for the remaining hours worked. According to the company, night shifts were canceled and employees scheduled to come to work were also paid.

PDX9 warehouses are known for their harsh working conditions. A 2018 survey by investigative journalism outlet Reveal found that 26% of warehouse workers have suffered an injury. The company’s fulfillment centers are reporting serious injuries at a rate more than twice the warehouse industry average, according to a report based on 2024 OSHA data.

Amazon’s fulfillment centers have come under multiple investigations from federal agencies and prosecutors over warehouse safety, with investigators alleging the company manipulated data and failed to properly record workplace injuries. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York is conducting an ongoing investigation into workplace safety at Amazon warehouses.

Amazon told TechCrunch that it has seen a 43% decrease in recordable incident rates globally since 2019. This is an indicator that tracks more work-related injuries than just basic first aid. The company said it has invested more than $2.5 billion in safety improvements since 2019, including hundreds of millions in 2026 alone.
