Andy Robertson: Liverpool defender to leave club at end of season | soccer news

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson is set to leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull in 2017 and in nine seasons has won two Premier League titles, one Champions League, one FA Cup and two League Cups, as well as the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Community Shield.

Robertson, 32, has made 373 appearances for Liverpool but was named second choice this season following the £40million signing of Milos Kerkes in the summer.

Robertson revealed that he found it difficult to leave Liverpool despite offers to do so. Tottenham were in talks to sign the Scotland captain in the winter transfer window, but a £5m move fell through.

He said: “It’s never easy to leave a club like Liverpool. It’s been a big part of my life and my family’s lives for the last nine years. But for me, players move on, other people move on. What remains constant is the club and obviously the fans.”

“I’ve had an amazing nine years here, I think it’s been well documented, especially the last year, I had the opportunity to leave but I didn’t take it because of how difficult it is to leave this club and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

“But I know that football continues to improve, teams continue to improve and I think now is the time for me to move on. “Wherever my next move is, wherever my career takes me, I will always look back on the incredible memories I have at this football club.

“I gave my heart and soul to the club for nine years and I don’t have many regrets. I grew as a man and as a person. This club will always mean the world to me, the fans will mean the world to me. It’s been a really tough journey.”

Robertson left Anfield in the summer, succeeding Mohamed Salah, who joined Liverpool in 2017. Ibrahima Konate’s contract also expires at the end of this season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid last summer, Luis Diaz moved to Bayern Munich and Diego Jota tragically passed away as Liverpool’s famous team continued to improve under Jurgen Klopp.

Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and Joe Gomez’s contracts expire in the summer of 2027.

Sky Sports David Richardson:

Andy Robertson will leave Liverpool this summer as a legend. Not bad for someone who signed from Hull for £8 million.

Robertson jokes that the left-back still reminds him of Jurgen Klopp in the limited opportunities he has had since making his debut. Robertson has played just once in 12 games since making his Anfield debut in the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, but he remembers being amazed at how the Liverpool fans chanted his name that day. They could sense he was going to be a good person.

Robertson performed well in 373 appearances for the club. He scored 13 goals, but his legacy is 69 assists. Of those, 60 have made it to the Premier League, putting him behind only Trent Alexander-Arnold for the most among defenders.

It was his partnership with Alexander-Arnold that became a standout feature in Klopp’s top team. They stormed down both flanks and exchanged diagonal passes, creating opportunities for Sadio Mane and Mo Salah.

Robertson delayed his departure due to his ties with the club, but the time has now come. The energy that once defined his game can no longer be summoned so relentlessly, and Liverpool must look to the future as they build a new era. But they will not forget his drive, leadership and consistency that made him one of the best full-backs of all time.
