Apple launches cheaper option for App Store subscriptions

Apple gives App Store developers a new way to attract subscribers with low-cost plans tied to one-year commitments. The company announced Monday that it will introduce a new subscription option that will allow customers to pay for an auto-renewable subscription on a monthly basis while committing to a 12-month plan. This model allows developers to offer discounted rates to customers in exchange for more predictable long-term profits.

This also indicates how many developers are already marketing annual subscriptions in their apps. App developers often display lower monthly prices to highlight the discount customers will receive if they purchase an annual subscription instead of a monthly option. If a user is on the fence about a long-term commitment, the thought of getting a better deal may help them choose the annual option.

Now, Apple is essentially formalizing what these developers have already done, allowing it to also create a set of policies for how these subscription offers are displayed to ensure they don’t mislead customers about the actual cost of the transaction.

However, this option will not be available to developers in the US or Singapore at launch. Apple hasn’t provided an explanation, but App Store litigation is still ongoing in the US over a specific court ruling in its case with Epic Games over how Apple can charge subscription fees. Apple probably doesn’t want to complicate matters further until that issue is finalized.

Meanwhile, Singapore may have been excluded from the initial launch because it has a sophisticated payments market with strong consumer rules.

Customers can find additional information about their subscription, including how to structure payments and cancel. Customers agree to a 12-month commitment, so you can cancel your subscription at any time, but monthly payments will continue to be deducted from your Apple Account until the end of your subscription period.

Additionally, Apple said in the announcement that customers can easily see completed and remaining payments for a given subscription by viewing this information in their Apple Account. Apple will also send reminder emails and, if you choose, push notifications to remind customers of renewal dates for upcoming purchases.

This option makes it easier for customers to get better deals on their subscriptions, but it can also lock them into a long-term plan if they’re wary of cancellations. Because these subscriptions auto-renew, customers may accidentally agree to an additional 12-month commitment if they forget to cancel before the renewal deadline.

Developers can configure this new type of subscription in App Store Connect and test it in Xcode. The new monthly subscription with a 12-month commitment will be available to customers worldwide using iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS Tahoe 26.4, tvOS 26.4, VisionOS 26.4 and later with the launch of iOS 26.5, iPadOS 26.5, macOS Tahoe 26.5, tvOS 26.5, and VisionOS 26.5 in May.
