Belgian police said a fire broke out in a 10-story apartment building in Antwerp, killing at least six people and injuring several others.
Heavy smoke was seen rising from the eighth floor of the building in the Linkeroever district after the fire broke out just before 10am (08:00 GMT) on Wednesday.
The released video shows a man climbing from his balcony through a neighbor’s window to escape the black smoke.
Police said more than 200 people live in the area and the fire department said 80 apartments in the building were evacuated.
The fire is said to have been caused by a technical problem on the first floor.
“There has been significant damage here in Linkeroever,” police spokeswoman Kim Bastian told Belgian public television, adding, “Many people have suffered serious or minor injuries.”
Resident Geert Dewulf told VRT how thick the smoke prevented him from getting out of his apartment. “We barricaded ourselves in the apartment and waited on the balcony. The fire brigade used a ladder to get us out of the balcony about 10 minutes later.”
