The Canadian pop star will perform alongside Madonna, Shakira and K-pop ensemble BTS in the tournament’s first-ever Super Bowl-style halftime show on July 19.

The 32-year-old spent most of his April performance sitting in front of his laptop, singing YouTube music videos of his previous hits such as Baby, Never Say Never, One Time and Beauty and the Beat.

The FIFA halftime show has been curated by Coldplay’s Chris Martin and will raise funds for the Fifa Global Citizenship Education Fund, an initiative aimed at raising $100 million (£73 million) for children around the world.

Among the performers who opened the competition across the three host countries in North America, Colombian pop star Shakira and Nigerian musician Burna Boy will also appear on stage.

Their global hit Dai Dai has dominated the music charts since the tournament began on June 11 and has become a fixture of the match.

The largest tournament in history began with 48 teams competing from Mexico, Canada and the United States, but the national teams from all three host countries were subsequently eliminated.

Eight teams remain as the quarterfinals resume on Thursday when France meets Morocco in Boston.

Spain and Belgium face each other in Los Angeles on Friday, while Norway and England face each other in Miami on Saturday. Defending world champion Argentina also plays Switzerland in Kansas City on Saturday.

Argentina’s Lionel Messi leads the tournament’s Golden Boot category with eight goals and has already made history several times over the past few weeks.

They were followed by France’s Kylian Mbappe and Norway’s Erling Haaland with seven goals, and England’s Harry Kane with six.
