Aurora, a new image generator, has been added to Elon Musk’s X.

X, the Elon Musk-owned social network formerly known as Twitter, has added a new image generator to its Grok Assistant.

Like the first image generator, X, added to Grok in October, this generator, called Aurora, appears to have few limitations.

Accessible through the In a quick test, the model fell short of nudity, but graphic content like “an image of a bloodied Donald Trump” was well within limits.

The origins of the Aurora are somewhat ambiguous.

Grok and the folks at xAI, Musk’s AI startup that develops many of X’s AI-based features, announced Aurora in a post on X early Saturday morning. However, the post does not reveal whether xAI trained Aurora on its own based on existing image generators, or whether it collaborated with a third party, as was the case with Flux, xAI’s first image generator.

Anyway, Aurora seems to excel at photorealistic images, including landscapes and still life images. But it’s not perfect. User (The image generator’s hands are very hard to work with.)

The launch of Aurora comes after X made Grok free to all users. Previously, the chatbot was behind X’s $8-a-month premium subscription. Free users can send up to 10 messages to Grok every two hours and create up to three images per day.
