AWS re:Invent 2024: How to expect and watch Amazon’s biggest event of the year

Amazon Web Services (AWS)’s biggest conference of the year is just around the corner. All signs point to an eventful event. AWS re:Invent 2024 begins Sunday in Las Vegas, with sessions scheduled to run through December 6. The keynote featuring AWS CEO Matt Garman will begin on December 3rd at 8 AM PT.

AWS plans to provide a live stream of the keynote on YouTube, covering everything that was announced on stage. Keep your eyes peeled for more on this and our stories throughout the re:Invent process.

Notably, this is Garman’s first re:Invent as CEO of AWS. His predecessor, Adam Selipsky, resigned in May after just three years as chairman.

So what can we expect?

Garman must address the market perception that AWS continues to trail Microsoft and Google in the generative AI race. AWS has launched a variety of generative AI services in recent months, and the company claims revenue from generative AI has reached “billions of dollars.”

AWS scored another win just a few weeks ago when it agreed to become Anthropic’s primary model training partner and help guide the Anthropic team’s future AI chip design efforts.

But AWS has also faced challenges, including the departure of its top AI executive, Matt Wood, and delays to its flagship Olympus model.

Garman will almost certainly talk about generative AI during his keynote. (The re:Invent catalog lists more than 500 generative AI-related sessions.) But he told TechCrunch last October that re:Invent won’t be “just an AI conference” this year.

“I think there will be innovation across computing, storage, databases, analytics and AI,” he said in an interview. “This will span the entire AWS stack.”

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy will make a cameo appearance during Garman’s keynote. Amazon describes this theme a little too harshly: “AWS highlights how we are reinventing fundamental building blocks and developing new experiences to give our customers and partners the capabilities they need to build a better future.” .”

AWS VP Swami Sivasubramanian will give an AI and data-driven presentation on new AWS services on December 4. And on December 5, Amazon CTO Werner Vogels will dive deep into his tech predictions for next year, a long-running regular part of re:Invent.

Like Garman, Sivasubramanian and Vogels’ speeches will be streamed on YouTube and covered right here on TechCrunch.
