Creamy and herbaceous, Basil Green Goddess Dressing is the perfect way to upgrade your next salad! Fresh basil makes this dressing stand out.

Green Goddess Dressing Recipe
In the summer when you have so much basil you don’t know what to do with it, I love this dressing to top tomatoes and cucumbers from my garden. I got the idea to add basil to the Green Goddess dressing from Ina Garten. While the traditional Green Goddess salad dressing is a combination of herbs, this one makes basil the star. My husband is obsessed with basil, so this recipe always makes him happy.
Why you'll love this recipe
- Creamy but light. Green Goddess dressing is supposed to be light and healthy, but the traditional version is a calorie bomb. Here, I lightened it up with light mayonnaise and sour cream. (If you’re on the keto diet, you can use full-fat.)
- variable. This dressing isn't just for salads! There are countless ways to use it. I've shared a few of my favorite ideas below.
- Better than buying it in a store. Sure, store-bought dressings are convenient, but they can't compare to homemade dressings, which always taste much fresher. (Try this Greek Yogurt Caesar Salad Dressing, too.)
Things that you need
Here are the ingredients you need to make Basil Green Goddess Dressing: Scroll down for the recipe card below. Accurate measurement
- Light mayonnaise – I like to use Hellman's.
- green onion – Green Caddis dressing has a hint of onion flavor in addition to the herbs, which comes from the green onions.
- basil – Using fresh basil is a no-no. Dried basil won’t work here!
- Lemon juice – Freshly squeezed juice adds bright flavor to salad dressings.
- garlic – This adds a bit of garlic flavor, but not too much. The lemon juice mellows the flavor a bit.
- Kosher salt and black pepper – A must-have for delicious dressing.
- Anchovy sauce – Just like Caesar salad, anchovies are the secret ingredient that makes this dressing stand out. For a vegetarian green Goddess dressing, you can add white miso paste or vegan Worcestershire sauce.
- Light sour cream – For creaminess and a little tartness.

Tips and Variations
- Use a different hub. For a more traditional take on the Green Goddess dressing, try combining herbs like parsley, chives, tarragon, and cilantro. Experiment with different combinations to find your favorite.
- Adjust consistency. You can thicken the dressing by adding more sour cream, which will make it more like a dip. To make the dressing thinner, mix in a tablespoon or two of water at a time.
- Add basilYou'll need a lot of basil to make this dressing, so make sure to fill your measuring cup to the brim.
How to Use Green Goddess Dressing
- As a salad dressing. This dressing goes perfectly with fresh green vegetables. I like to serve it with iceberg slices and fresh traditional tomatoes.
- Deep into. Serve as a dip for crunchy vegetables like carrots, celery, and bell peppers. It can also be used as a dip for dry buffalo wings.
- Put it in a sandwich or wrap. Spread it on sandwiches or wraps for extra flavor and creaminess. It’s also great on chicken burgers.
- With grilled meatSprinkle it over grilled chicken breast, fish or shrimp and enjoy as a summer main dish.
- In pasta salad. Make a simple pasta salad by tossing cooked pasta, chickpeas or white beans, and grape tomatoes. (You’ll love this Green Goddess Potato Salad, too!)
