BBC at site of China’s worst mining disaster in 10 years

A coal mine explosion in northern China has killed at least 82 people and left two missing, officials said.

The gas explosion at the Liuxianyu coal mine is China’s worst mining disaster since 2009, and Chinese President Xi Jinping said no effort should be spared in search and rescue operations.

Early Sunday morning, rescuers deployed mine-scanning robots underground, equipped with gas sensors and infrared cameras, state media reported.

BBC China correspondent Stephen McDonell is at the site of the explosion in Shaanxi province.
