BBC in Tehran as Iran marks 47th anniversary of Islamic Revolution

Iranian authorities have shown their strength weeks after using unprecedented force to suppress anti-government protests to mark the 47th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

The BBC is visiting Tehran for the first time since the crackdown that left at least 6,490 protesters dead across the country, according to human rights activists.

Lyse Doucet, the BBC’s chief international correspondent, said the flags lining the capital’s streets and the large crowds of government supporters embody the image of the country the government wants to see on the streets – an image of Iranians coming out to show their support for the Islamic Republic and the revolution.

Our correspondents are reporting from Tehran on the condition that none of their material be used by the BBC’s Persian service. These restrictions apply to all international media organizations operating in Iran.
