The Belgian Food Agency has urged people to pay special attention to food safety, especially when preparing meals at home for family or friends.

In 2025, 773 foodborne illness outbreaks were reported, 19% of which occurred in the home environment. A total of 3,375 people became ill, 71 of whom required hospitalization.

The number of deaths also increased to 12 from the previous year. The increase is primarily due to a Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) outbreak that affected nursing homes in August.
