Mr Biden's illness comes as calls grow louder for him to drop out of the race.
In recent weeks, more than two dozen Democratic politicians have called on him to resign, including California Rep. Adam Schiff, who said today he has serious doubts about whether the president can defeat former President Donald Trump.
He urged Mr Biden to “pass the torch.”
Mr. Schiff said Mr. Biden was “one of the most important presidents in the history of our country” and that allowing another Democratic candidate to run would “secure his legacy of leadership.”
According to reports from ABC News, The Washington Post and Politico, leading congressional Democrats Schumer and Jeffries recently met privately with Biden and expressed concerns among their colleagues that Biden’s lead in the November election could hinder his ability to control both chambers of Congress.
White House press secretary Andrew Bates said after the report that “the president told both leaders that he is their party's nominee, that he plans to win, and that he looks forward to working with them to pass a 100-day agenda to help working families.”
“It was a private conversation and will remain private,” Jeffries said. Schumer’s office called the report “nonsense” but added that the Democratic leader “expressed his team’s views directly to President Biden.”
In an interview with BET scheduled to air Wednesday evening, Mr. Biden said the country was so “divided” that it would be difficult for him to transition the presidency.
The president also said for the first time that he would consider withdrawing from the race if doctors diagnosed him with “health problems.”
