This result was also recognized by Venezuela's allies China, Russia and Iran.
However, the United States, the European Union and other G7 countries have called on Maduro's government to release detailed voting data.
“The election results overwhelmingly demonstrate the will of the Venezuelan people,” Blinken said on social media. “Democratic opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez won the most votes in Sunday’s election.”
“The Venezuelan people voted, and their vote should count.”
Blinken’s intervention is significant. After the last election in 2018 was widely dismissed as neither free nor fair, countries, including the United States, decided to recognize then-opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim president and impose sanctions on Venezuela.
“It is time for Venezuelan political parties to begin discussions on a respectful and peaceful transition consistent with Venezuela’s electoral laws and the aspirations of the Venezuelan people,” Secretary Blinken said.
