Bluesky grows to over 9 million users

Blue Sky continues to grow. The company announced Friday morning that it had added 3 million new users, bringing its total to over 9 million.

In other words, the social platform’s user base has grown by about 50% in the week or so since the Brazilian court banned X (formerly Twitter). The ban pushed Bluesky to the top of the free iPhone app charts in Brazil, where it currently sits in second place behind Meta’s competitor Threads.

In addition to sharing the latest user numbers, Bluesky assured existing and new users that video support is “coming soon.”

The platform started as a Twitter-backed initiative to create an open social protocol, but has since transitioned into an independent, venture-backed startup and fully launched to the public in February.

In a previous post about growth, Bluesky said that 85% of their new users were Brazilian. Acquiring too many new users too quickly led to occasional technical issues.
