Bournemouth leapfrogged increasingly poor Tottenham in the Premier League after Dean Huysen’s header gave them a 1-0 win at the Vitality Stadium.
At the age of 19 years and 235 days, Huijsen became the Cherries’ youngest Premier League goalscorer when he met Marcus Tavernier’s corner after 17 minutes.
Ryan Christie hit the bar and Evanilsen was flagged for offside by VAR, which could have easily been a defeat for Spurs as their sixth defeat saw them drop to 10th in the table.
The result means it is Ange Postecoglou’s first win in six games less than a fortnight after his side’s 4-0 win over champions Manchester City.
Spurs have now lost nine of their 13 away Premier League games, but Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has no need to worry for now. His team rose to 9th place with 21 points.
Bournemouth get another home scalp
Iraola’s side have upset title hopefuls Arsenal and Manchester City in two of their previous three games at home. Spain U21 international Huijsen has secured an extra scalp on the south coast as Spurs suffer another setback in an uneven season so far.
This was a well-deserved success that should have been more comfortable. Christie hit the woodwork and the impressive hosts failed to capitalize on many of their chances and toothless Tottenham created little going forward.
Spurs had beaten champions Manchester City 4-0 in their previous away game, but that was their only win in five games in all competitions ahead of the trip to Dorset.
The north London club were starting to rise, with substitute skipper James Maddison sending off a wasteful shot from Dominic Solanke after the recalled Dejan Kulusevski fired straight at Cherries goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Ange: I got some pretty direct feedback.
While Tottenham continued to dominate possession, Cherries still remained the bigger threat after breaking the deadlock.
Tavernier had the ball on goal 14 minutes after the opening but was clearly offside and later Milos Kerkez’s cross was blocked by Forster with a close-range header.
Despite Tottenham’s shortcomings, Postekoglou opted not to make a change at the break. But apart from Son Heung-min having a strike disallowed for offside, Spurs had a much more dodgy second half.
“We didn’t do enough,” Postecoglou said. “We conceded some really poor goals and lost our way a little bit and allowed Bournemouth to play the game they wanted to play. “We had some good moments in the second half but we just couldn’t score.
“We tend to shoot ourselves in the foot when we really need to take control of the game.
“We know it will be difficult for them to win here and the last thing you want is to give them a goal that gives them the kind of momentum they need.”
As he approached the fans at the final whistle, Postecoglou added: “I couldn’t say anything… They were pretty disappointed, right, and I got some pretty direct feedback about how we were doing.”
Bournemouth should have outplayed Spurs with Tavernier and substitute Dango Ouattara each squandering excellent chances with shots.
The mistake created a lot of tension during the six minutes of added time, but ultimately mattered little as Tottenham failed to make any meaningful attempts to snatch a point.
Huijsen: My first goal gave me goosebumps
Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen told Amazon Prime:
“We know we give the teams that come here a hard time.
“It’s a really exciting win. Every little boy dreams of playing in the Premier League. I’m really happy to have scored my first goal. It’s definitely a special memory. The goals are all thanks to our trainers. We’ve scored a couple of sets – because of that. I scored a goal.
“How do you say that in English? I see, it gives me goosebumps. It was definitely a goosebumps moment.
“We all worked really hard for this win. We also know Tottenham are a very physical team and I think it was a great match-up and a great game to watch for everyone watching at home or at the stadium. I think first of all, we have to avoid relegation.
“But I think we have a little more in us, so maybe, who knows, maybe if we keep pushing like this we can get a conference league berth or something.”
