Why St. Thomas Continues to Grow

St. Thomas remains one of the Caribbean’s strongest destinations for a number of reasons, including consistent airlifts, strong resort inventory, easy island excursions, and a year-round boating culture that keeps marinas and charter operations active throughout the season.

The island serves as both a destination and a gateway.

Travelers stay on St. Thomas to enjoy its beaches, shopping, nightlife and resorts, but many also use the island as a jumping-off point for nearby destinations including St. John, Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke.

This flexibility continues to drive demand from travelers looking for Caribbean vacations that combine beach time with boat rides, ferry trips and restaurant exploration.

Magens Bay remains the island’s most famous beach, with calm waters and a long crescent of white sand surrounded by green hills. Sapphire Beach and Coki Beach in the East End continue to attract visitors for snorkeling and day trips. Red Hook comes alive into the evening with bars, waterfront restaurants and ferry traffic to St. John.

Charlotte Amalie also remains one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean, but night tourism has become an increasingly important part of the island’s economy, especially during the winter months.

The U.S. Virgin Islands’ status as a U.S. territory continues to appeal to U.S. travelers because U.S. citizens do not need a passport to travel from the mainland.

Breeze continues to expand its Caribbean services.

The St. Thomas launch is part of Breeze Airways’ drive for greater growth as a leisure and sun travel destination.

Airlines have continued to add routes connecting small and mid-sized U.S. airports with destinations that historically required connections through larger hubs.

For Caribbean destinations, additional direct service remains one of the biggest factors driving tourism growth.

Tourism authorities across the region have continued to prioritize airlift expansion as travelers increasingly base their destination decisions on ease of access and total travel time.
