The women’s soccer match between the North and South Korean women’s soccer teams is the first time North Korean athletes have crossed the border since 2018.

The North Korean national team will face Japan’s Tokyo Verdi Belleza in the final at the same stadium on Saturday. More than 7,000 tickets for the North-South semifinals held at Suwon Stadium were sold out within a few hours of going on sale.

But with relations between the two countries severely frozen, BBC Seoul correspondent Jake Kwon looks at whether the soccer match could spark new diplomatic efforts.
