Canada wildfires: 25,000 evacuated from tourist town of Jasper

This includes the Trans Mountain pipeline, a Canadian government-owned pipeline that runs through Jasper National Park. As of Wednesday, it was still operating and protected by sprinklers.

More than 400 fires were recorded in British Columbia, while 176 fires were burning in neighbouring Alberta.

The fire was first reported in Jasper last week, and the city's mayor, Richard Ireland, told CBC the city was facing its “worst nightmare.”

Jasper National Park says “air quality has deteriorated” in the area in X. The park is the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies.

After the evacuation order was issued, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith told residents on Wednesday to “stay safe.” She said in a Facebook post that she was in “constant contact” with authorities.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government has approved Alberta's request for federal assistance.

“We are immediately deploying @CanadianForces resources, evacuation assistance, and more emergency wildfire resources to the province, and are coordinating firefighting and aviation support,” Trudeau said on X.
