Canadian Open: Robert McIntyre obsessed with winning first PGA Tour title | golf news

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre recovered from a shaky start to beat numerous challengers to win his first PGA Tour title at the RBC Canadian Open.

McIntyre shot a 2-under 68 in the final round at Hamilton Golf and Country Club to move to 16 under par, one stroke ahead of Ben Griffin.

Griffin put the pressure on with birdies on the 15th, 16th and 17th holes, forcing one of his partners to close, but was unable to record four straight fours in the final round to advance to the playoffs.

Victor Perez finished one stroke behind, and Rory McIlroy and Tom Kim tied for fourth place at 13 under par. McIlroy, who started the 7th day in the lead, made 3 birdies in a row until the 6th hole and then pulled down to within 2 at one point.

MacIntyre had the luxury of two-putting from 10 feet on the 18th hole and hugging his father Dougie after he won, having been suddenly called upon to caddy.

When asked why he was so emotional during his victory, MacIntyre gestured to his father. CBS: “because of this.

“I'm honestly speechless. This is everything for me, my family, my girlfriend and my team. I can't believe what I've accomplished with him.

“I’m crying because I’m happy, but I’m smiling because I don’t think I can.”

MacIntyre saw his overnight lead of four shots collapse in the space of four holes after the home favorite bogeyed the first and Mackenzie Hughes made a hat-trick with an early birdie.

Robert Macintyre is upset after a TV coverage drone flew too close to the RBC Canadian Open and became a distraction.

But MacIntyre responded admirably with birdies on holes 4, 7 and 8 to regain control of the event, despite having to repeatedly request that the drone used for TV coverage be moved before he finally got his wish.

Another birdie on the 11th was followed by a wild tee shot into a water hazard on the 12th, and another bogey on the 13th opened the chase, but the Ryder Cup star hit a decisive birdie on the 15th to take the final three. I safely passed each hole with a par.

MacIntyre has made no secret of the fact that he has struggled to adjust to life in the United States this season, but he benefited greatly from his three-week return in Scotland in April and qualified for the Myrtle Beach Classic before finishing eighth at the U.S. PGA Championship.
