Cathay Pacific grounds aircraft due to engine problems

The airline said it expected the suspension to last until at least Wednesday.

Cathay Pacific said the engine component that caused the plane to return to Hong Kong was “the first failure of this type on any A350 aircraft worldwide”.

“We have identified several identical engine components that require replacement, have secured spare parts and are working on repairs,” the airline said in a statement.

“As a result, several aircraft will be grounded for several days while this process is completed, affecting Cathay Pacific's flight schedule.”

The airline expects inspections of the A350 aircraft to be completed late Tuesday.

Airbus did not immediately respond to the BBC's request for comment.

Cathay Pacific took delivery of its first Airbus A350 aircraft in 2016, which is equipped with fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce engines.

Rolls-Royce told BBC News: “We are committed to working closely with the airline, aircraft manufacturer and relevant authorities to support their investigation into this incident.”

Other airlines operating the A350 include British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Qatar Airways. The BBC has contacted the companies for comment.

Earlier this year Rolls-Royce announced plans to invest in improving its engine range, including the Trent XWB-97.

In 2023, Tim Clark, the president of Gulf carrier Emirates, raised concerns about the durability of the engines and the maintenance prices charged by Rolls-Royce.
