He scored 110 goals in 564 appearances for Celtic, scoring in every season of his 17 seasons at Celtic.

“I’m really happy. I’ve spent my whole career here and loved every minute,” he told the club’s website.

“We have been very successful here and I am delighted to have signed for another year. I will give my best to the club during my time here.”

“While I’m still playing, I hope to continue to contribute and help the team when I can. I’ll give it my all until I’m done playing. When I’m done playing, I’ll look back on so many great memories, but hopefully I can make a few more before I’m done playing.”

Manager Martin O’Neill added: “I really want James to finish his career here at Celtic. I just didn’t want him to go somewhere else. I think he wanted that too.”

“But the most important thing when you take on someone is to know if they are worth another year and James has proven this season that he is worth it.

“He changed the game and did incredibly well. His contribution off the bench in recent weeks has been outstanding and deserved. That’s the point.”

“Then stop being sentimental right away. He deserves it.

“He’s been a huge presence for the football club since Neil Lennon brought him into the reserves as a youngster, and he’s someone I love. I like a player who can take on people and he can take on people. Even at his age, to have that little pace is worth his weight in gold.”

The first match after the split will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
