Nelly Korda moved closer to winning a third major title at the Chevron Championships as the world No. 2 set a new 36-hole scoring record, taking her six shots clear of the weekend.
Korda, who won the Chevron two years ago, was 14 under par after shooting two straight 65s, and no one in the field had shot better than 67 over the first two days.
The world No. 2 extended her streak with birdies on the final two holes. She made only one bogey in the opening two rounds at Houston Memorial Park.
At the French Evian Championship, which was selected as a major by the LPGA in 2013, it was the lowest 36-hole score in a major career and ranked third in the LPGA major, following Jeong-eun Lee6 (127), Brooke Henderson (128), and In-ji Jeon (129).
Korda’s six-stroke lead is tied with Sheehan Petty in 1990 and Inji Cheon in 2022 for the largest 36-hole lead in an LPGA major championship since 1980.
“I’m comfortable with my game,” Korda said. “I think where I’m most comfortable is having the mindset that when I mess up, I’ll figure it out.
“Sometimes I feel trapped by the tension of not wanting to make mistakes, wanting to play well, and always wanting to be on top.”
Korda finished alone in second place at 8 under par, six strokes ahead of Patty Tavatanakit, while Ina Yoon, Ryan O’Toole and Farah O’Keefe, one of eight amateurs in the field, were one shot behind in third place.
World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul will be in shock over the weekend after missing the cut, and is 3 over par with a 73 following an opening 74 on Friday.
LPGA rookie Mimi Rhodes, who was in contention after an opening 69, also dropped 4 strokes in the last 5 holes and missed the cut with a 6-over-par 78.
British prospects Charlie Hull and Lottie Woad spent the weekend at 2 under par and 1 over par, respectively, after shooting rounds of 70 and 72 in Friday’s rounds.
