China's mega cruise ship sets sail for the first time: Travel Weekly

China's first domestically built large cruise ship set sail this week for Adora Cruises.

The 135,000-ton Adora Magic City departed Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Port on January 1 for a six-day voyage calling at Jeju Island in South Korea and Fukuoka and Nagasaki in Japan.

Magic City can accommodate up to 5,246 guests.

The ship is the first of two large cruise ships under construction at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard. The second large ship built in China will be much larger, with a gross tonnage of 142,000 tons.

The brand's parent company, Adora Cruises Limited, was formerly known as CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping Limited and was established as a joint venture between China Shipbuilding Corp. and Carnival Corp.

The ship’s debut comes as cruise lines look to Asia after the pandemic and extended lockdowns. Cruise lines are now looking to expand their presence in Asia, including Royal Caribbean International, which will return to China for the first time in four years. The line will sail four- and five-day voyages on the Spectrum of the Seas from Shanghai.
