A gas explosion occurred at a coal mine in northern China on Friday, killing dozens of people, according to China’s official Xinhua News Agency. In 2024, China’s National Mine Safety Administration cited coal mines as having “serious safety risks” and high gas levels. As of Saturday morning, the cause of the explosion had not yet been determined, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
