Chris Eubank Jr’s long-awaited grudge fight with Conor Benn is nearing the finish line and ‘a stadium blockbuster awaits’ in April, promoter Eddie Hearn has said.
The bitter rivals have been locked in negotiations in recent weeks but Hearn, who represents Benn, believes an agreement could finally be reached in the coming days.
It has been reported that Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is being considered as the stadium, but the location has not yet been confirmed and the date is said to be April 26.
“I think we might make it this week or we might not,” Hearn told Sky Sports. “His Excellency (Turki Al-Sheikh, Saudi Arabian Entertainment Chief) has made it clear that this is a fight he wants to see and participate in. Negotiate with both sides.
“If I were negotiating with Eubank, to be honest, I don’t think the fight would come to fruition. Fortunately, that’s not the case.
“We’re getting closer to the finish line. We’re not done yet, but we have a stadium blockbuster coming in April.”
Hearn added: “If everyone had sense I would 100% (I’m sure the fight would happen) but this is boxing and no one has sense. Watch this space.”
Eubank Jr’s October 2022 fight with Benn was canceled after his opponent tested positive for the banned substance clomiphene.
The British Boxing Board of Control has revoked Benn’s licence, but the National Anti-Doping Panel is “not satisfied” that the 28-year-old committed a doping offence. The suspension was lifted in November of this year.
Benn’s reprieve paves the way for Eubank Jr and Benn, the sons of great British rivals Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn, to rekindle their rivalry in the ring.
