Chris Eubank Jr could return to super middleweight boxing and challenge for a world title.
Eubank Jr has had a long professional career filled with high-profile fights, but despite holding a lightly regarded IBO strap, he has never won a World Championship.
Most recently, Eubank made headlines twice during his middleweight clash with Conor Benn at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over a rehydration clause during the fight. He won the first match and lost the second.
Eubank Jr, who is widely known for his weight loss, said he had “issues” to regain.
He could return to super middleweight boxing and have a path to a world title shot at 168 pounds.
Terence Crawford defeated Canelo Alvarez to become the undisputed super middleweight world champion. Crawford is now retired and a new champion will take the 168lb belt.
The WBC promoted Christian Mbili to super middleweight world champion. With Alvarez taking the top spot, the Mexican superstar could face Mbili.
Eubank Jr could also end up fighting either Mbilli or Alvarez for the WBC title.
“Of course. Chris Eubank is a tremendous fighter. I believe he sacrificed too much for the weight. And he is a natural fighter for the division. Great potential. Super fighter.” WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said: sky sports.
“He is without a doubt a world-class fighter.”
He added: “We’ll cover the situation next week to see what happens with Mbilli and the division. Of course there’s Canelo, (Jaime) Munguia, Lester Martinez, Luka Plantic. There are so many fighters who could put on a good fight for Mbilli, the champion.
“A tremendous kid, a great story behind (Mbilli) from Cameroon to France to Canada. He won eight title defenses for the WBC Americas Championship. He then won the interim title and defended it in the Fight of the Year against Lester Martinez, and the WBC ordered the fight against (Hamzah) Sheeraz. When Sheeraz took a different direction, the WBC voted in favor of naming him WBC World Champion.”
Ilford’s Sheeraz is in prime position to challenge for the super middleweight WBO world title and is likely to win it. Sheeraz promoter Frank Warren also issued a challenge to Eubank Jr.
There will be a chance for Eubank Jr to challenge for honors at the highest level. Warren would welcome a fight between Sheeraz and Eubank Jr.
“I’ll do that all day long. All day long. I’ll bet my house on Hamzah doing his job,” Warren said. sky sports.
“We’ll see what happens. Or if he wants to take it to the next level again, Conor Ben, do so immediately. Any of those.”
Eubank wants to fight again, but can’t say when. He said late last year: “I’m not going to box again until I’m back to 100 per cent and I don’t know when that will be.
He added, “But one thing is certain: for the sake of the fans who have supported me so far, I will do my best to make a big comeback to my old self someday.”
